STUDIO THANASIS
OPEN OFFICE
Studio Thanasis is an architectural practice dedicated to site-responsive design, pursuing an approach that crafts distinct atmospheres rooted in local context. Each project is conceived as a narrative—shaped through on-site strategies, material exploration, and a dialogue between art and architecture. The studio was founded by Thanasis Oikonomou, a Greek-Canadian architect born and raised in Vancouver. He studied Architecture at Dalhousie University, following a degree in Biology from the University of British Columbia, bringing an interdisciplinary perspective to his work. His formative years at internationally renowned offices (OMA, Olson Kundig, and Architecture Research Office – ARO), along with his collaboration with Junya Ishigami, have shaped a design sensibility that balances theoretical rigor with craftsmanship and contextual awareness. Collaborations with artists, theorists, and fellow designers led to the founding of Studio Thanasis in 2022, as well as the collaborative space 567 in 2023. The practice has developed award-winning residential and cultural projects, receiving distinctions such as the DoMA Awards, Best First Project by a Young Architect, and the Grail Awards, and has participated in the Venice Architecture Biennale and Open House Athens. The studio has also contributed to architectural education—as a guest critic at Central Saint Martins, Cornish College of the Arts, and the University of Washington, and as a lecturer at Dalhousie University—and has presented its work in public talks at MoonStation Athens and on the television series “Astiko Topio”.
