OPEN OFFICE
Kokkinou Kourkoulas Architects & Associates was founded in 1987 by Maria Kokkinou (1956-2022) and Andreas Kourkoulas. Through the creation of space with materials, we try to define the way in which meaning is produced and an individual and collective consciousness is shaped. Influenced by contemporary art movements, we tried to understand architecture as a spatial experience, which extends the idea of function into a ritual process. Our main concern is the way in which three-dimensional forms create space, stimulating the human senses of the body moving in space. Our goal is to create a framework of boundaries and spatial relationships that gives meaning to everyday public and private life, giving rhythm to movement and vision. Architecture is a highly poetic process, which places the idea of allegory at its center. Its poetic mission is accomplished when a building becomes part of the history of a place. It combines memory with imagination, the past with the future. In this professional career, the office has won many awards in domestic and international competitions. Andreas Kourkoulas studied architecture at the National Technical University of Athens, and is also an Emeritus Professor at NTUA. He completed his Ph.D. at the Bartlett School of Architecture, U.C.L., on “Linguistics in Architectural Theory and Criticism after Modernism” and postgraduate studies at the Architectural Association Graduate School in London. He has worked at the architectural office O.M.A. in London (Zeggelis – Koolhas). Along the way, he has participated in many lectures, speeches, written articles and taught courses at Architectural Schools in Greece and abroad.
En Route is a team of architects who approaches design as a process, which is unique to each project. We believe in design through analysis and research. We are an international team based in Athens. The team was founded by Hannes Livers Gutberlet and Katerina Kourkoulas, who both had professional activities in London, New York, Zurich and Rotterdam. Hannes studied economics at EBS University in Germany and studied architecture at TU Delft, M.I.T. and ETH Zurich. He has been a researcher and has taught architecture at ETH Zurich. He has worked at Architectuurstudio Herman Hertzberger, the Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA) and the Urban Think Tank. He is a PhD candidate at ETH Zurich. Katerina studied architecture at the Bartlett School of U.C.L. and at the Cooper Union where she was awarded the AIA School Medal and The Certificate of Merit for her studies. She taught architecture at the Cooper Union and ETH Zurich. She has worked for Buschow Henley and Lot-Ek.
