KYPSELI THROUGH FOKIONOS NEGRI ST.

KYPSELI THROUGH FOKIONOS NEGRI ST.

OPEN WALKS

The area of Kypseli, originally a suburb of Athens, transforms into a densely built urban environment in the early 20th century. The first urban mansions begin to appear, soon to be replaced by the first apartment buildings influenced by the Modernist movement within a few decades. The introduction of the concept of horizontal or multi-floor property ownership for the first time triggers the phenomenon of intense reconstruction that followed. In the 1930s, a central green lung is created above the stream of Lefidis: the well-known ‘green avenue’ of Fokionos Negri. This new linear park drastically changes the street’s appearance, while new constructions such as the Kypseli Market and the Kanakis and Lanara Apartment Buildings lead the subsequent development of plots along the road. This development occurred during the Interwar period and mainly from the mid-1930s to 1940, as well as in the post-war decades of the 1950s and 1960s. Today, despite the cohesion of the urban fabric, the image of Kypseli encompasses a mixture of architectural forms and historical phases of the city of Athens, samples of which are found in the present pedestrian walkway of Fokionos Negri.

On this journey, we will explore the history of the Kypseli area through the architecture of its public space on Fokionos Negri, as well as through its Interwar and post-war architecture
