ATHENS MUNICIPAL GALLERY

ATHENS MUNICIPAL GALLERY

The Old Silk Mill building, constructed in 1834–1835 based on designs by the Danish architect Hans Christian Hansen, is one of the earliest neoclassical industrial buildings in Athens. The two-storey structure, with its tiled roof and U-shaped layout, is defined by strict symmetry and regularly spaced openings, reflecting the early industrial architectural language of the 19th century.
The building initially operated as a silk factory, becoming an important industrial unit of its time, and went through multiple uses over the years. After a long period of abandonment, the complex was donated to the Municipality of Athens in 1993 and later restored through interventions that preserved the main form of the historic shell. Today it houses the Municipal Gallery of Athens, giving new cultural life to this historic industrial building.
