MUNICIPAL ART GALLERY OF PIRAEUS
Built in 1901, the Old Post Office of Piraeus was the first purpose-built postal building in Greece. Designed by municipal engineer Emmanuel Papakonstantinou and inspired by major European public buildings of the period, it was completed in just two years. Its monumental two-storey structure is organized around a striking octagonal hall, covered by a metal and glass roof where all public transactions once took place.
The building housed postal, telegraph and telephone services until 1973. Since 2005, it has been home to the Municipal Art Gallery of Piraeus, giving new cultural life to one of the city’s most historic civic buildings.
