THE OLD INDUSTRIAL SIDE OF ATHENS
OPEN WALKS
From the mid-nineteenth century and behind the neoclassical bourgeois image of Athens, at the city’s western end, the industrial area of the city was developed in a short time. The first industrial buildings emerged on the axis of Piraeus in its junction with Athens. From the 1860s onwards, the first densely populated urban neighbourhoods appeared in the area.
Starting from one of the first documents of the industrial heritage at the area of Keramikos, the Gazi factory (Technopolis of Athens), the walk includes industrial buildings that survive to this day and testify to the industrial and social history of the area, from the mid-19th century to golden decade of the Athenian industry and the deindustrialisation of the axis.
The thematic walk on the streets of industrial Athens, allows the visitor to recognise the industrial heritage and its role through the industrial shells, their architecture, their evolution, but also through the whole area which they created both architecturally and socially, and which today consists the cultural core of the city.
